Data Domain: The Right Answer for Storage Virtualization

Dotted Line

The March 2010 announcement by Federal CIO Vivek Kundra that began a government-wide initiative to dramatically reduce IT operations across the federal space, and consolidate the more than 1,100 government data centers was just the beginning of a coming tidal wave of data virtualization and footprint reduction initiatives. In light of this rapidly growing need for increased efficiency of space and disaster recovery capabilities, EMC Corporation, the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, has come to acquire Data Domain systems in July 2009, outbidding NetApp, Inc. for majority ownership of the corporation and its industry-changing disk storage and de-duplication technology.

Known by some as ‘The Tape Killer,’ Data Domain systems and solutions aim to provide customers a disk and network-based data protection solution that not only retains, replicates, and recovers data, but offers a secure and efficient alternative to the unreliability and high TCO associated with writing, transporting, cataloguing and storing of tape-based infrastructures. Data Domain systems operate from an in-line de-duplication technology that not only identifies redundant files, but redundant data within these files and utilize a unique de-duplication algorithm to eliminate these redundancies as the data is being stored, reducing the data volume by an average of 10-30x.

In light of the exponentially increased importance of data retention and disaster recovery capabilities, Data Domain offers what is known as a Data Invulnerability Architecture. As data is stored, Data Domain’s in-line de-duplication moves only the unique data segments across the WAN, allowing customers to effectively increase their off-site storage and disaster recovery practices without reducing bandwidth. In addition, all Data Domain systems employ advanced levels of continuous data verification and integrity to ensure even archived data is always accurate and fully recoverable in a matter of seconds or minutes.
