Background
The role of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Human Resources
is to plan and efficiently manage personnel assignments, workforce
planning, personnel information, employee services and personnel
policy. The Bureau must manage the responsibilities of personnel
processing for 19,000 employees.
Problem
The Human Resources Bureau implemented PeopleSoft's Human Resource
Management System (HRMS) in April 1999. The Bureau's database environment
runs off an Oracle® back end with PeopleSoft®
being the front end through which users enter and access the data.
Therefore, the Bureau of Human Resources needed database administrators
(DBAs) to maintain the database properly and to ensure data integrity.
B&E's
Right Solution
Buchanan & Edwards supports the Bureau's Oracle-PeopleSoft environment
through the Database Administrators working with the Bureau's database
systems and applications. Our DBAs make sure good, accurate data
is held in the database repositories. Database Administration is
a daily job, so our team of dedicated DBAs ensure the Bureau's databases
are tuned for maximum performance and the over 2,000 users have
access to the data. Other maintenance our DBAs do includes reviewing
logs, backing up the systems and migrating data and objects (tables,
indexes, PeopleSoft panels, and People Code). Another important
task our DBAs do is backing up the database, which provides for
a swift recovery if the system fails. The DBAs also upgrade to newer
versions of PeopleSoft and Oracle. Along with the upgrades, the
DBAs apply patches to the PeopleSoft and Oracle environments as
needed. The DBAs work on all aspects of the database environment:
applications, application servers, process schedulers and the data
repository.
Result
B&E still works with the Bureau to implement additional requirements
as they arise. In addition, because of the expertise of our DBAs,
the Bureau's database environment runs efficiently with a variety
of off-the-shelf and custom applications.
